Plan for the days you can’t act for yourself.
Choose the person you trust to manage your legal and financial matters if you’re unable to, or simply not available, so someone can step in without going to court.
What a Power of Attorney does
A Power of Attorney is an important part of your Personal Planning, and arguably the most important document you can have. It lets you choose in advance who can manage your legal and financial matters if you’re unable to, or simply not available. We walk you through each decision in plain language.
Key decisions in your Power of Attorney:
-
You choose someone you trust, your Attorney, and we also help you name an alternate in case your first choice can’t act. Your Attorney doesn’t have to be a lawyer.
-
Your Attorney can manage your legal and financial matters, such as banking, paying bills and dealing with property.
-
You decide whether it starts right away and we talk through which makes sense for you. It’s called “enduring” because it keeps working if you lose capacity. It stops applying at death, when your Will takes over.
If you don’t have a Power of Attorney
If you become incapable of managing your own affairs, your family may have to apply to court to be appointed as your committee. This is called a committeeship, and it is slower, more expensive and more public than having a Power of Attorney in place in advance.
You don’t want to be stuck, unable to act for yourself and no longer able to appoint someone to act for you, at the very time you need it most.

If any of this applies to you, we’ll flag it after your initial consultation and give you a final quote before we go further.
